AMR and AMI

Black Hills Energy continues to expand its use of meter-reading technology to deliver increased efficiency and enhanced service to our natural gas and electric customers. The technology works by sending a low-powered radio signal from a transmitter on the meter on your property to Black Hills meter-reading-receiving equipment. The benefits include our service personnel no longer need access to your property monthly to read the meter.

In our natural gas territories, we're expanding our use of Automated Meter Reading within Nebraska, where it has been used since the late 1980s, and introducing it to cities in Colorado, Iowa and Kansas.

In our southern Colorado electric territory, all 93,300 customers now have an Advanced Metering Infrastructure smart meter on their property after Black Hills Energy – Colorado Electric completed a three-phased approach that began in August 2008 to install new smart meters on all customers’ homes and businesses.

For more than 125 years, Black Hills has continued to increase operational efficiencies by implementing practical, cost-effective technology to provide customers with safe, reliable energy service at a competitive price. AMR and AMI are two ways we're doing that today.
