Small System Category - Customer Owned

If you are interested in installing a PV system up to 10 kilowatts, Black Hills recommends the following steps:

  • First, review the program rules.
  • After you are familiar with the program rules, contact a qualified PV installation contractor from the list provided by the Colorado Solar Energy Industries Association at this link: www.coseia.org/Directory.html
  • Black Hills recommends that you get estimates from two or more contractors.
  • Once you have selected an installation contractor, fill out an online application for a rebate from Black Hills. Your installer can provide you with the information necessary to fill out an application, or can fill it out for you. Fill out an application online here.
  • Once your application with a simple 1-line diagram showing the PV system design with major components and a deposit is received, it will be reviewed and when approved, a reservation number will be assigned and a reservation letter agreement will be provided explaining the incentive available for your PV system.
  • Deposits are due at time of application submittal and must be received by the Company at its Pueblo, Colorado offices by 3:00 p.m. on the fifth calendar day following the date of submission of the application. Black Hills will notify you about your rebate and PBI payment following our receipt of your fully completed application. If not, the application will be declined and the deposit returned.

Rebates and PBI payments for PV systems up to 10 kilowatts will be calculated as follows:

  • A 3,000 dc watt system (3 kW) eligible for a $1.00 per watt dc will receive a $3,000 upfront rebate. The PBI will be $.0945 per kWh of metered solar energy production. A 3,000 watt system will typically generate 4,575 kWh per year, yielding a $432 yearly payment over a nine year term. The PBI term is for a 9 year period, yielding a total PBI of $3,891.00. (This illustration is only an estimate as systems will be affected by many variables such as size, tilt and orientation of the array).
  • Note: all small systems under 10 kW will only be eligible for incentives up to 6 kW. Above 6 kW and up to 10 kW are allowed to interconnect and receive net-metering, but will not receive a rebate or PBI for the amount above 6 kW.

Please see the capacity offering matrix for additional information on incentive levels.
