What You Should Know
Black Hills Energy delivers safe, reliable natural gas service to thousands of homes and businesses. While natural gas service has an excellent safety record, it is possible to have a gas leak by accident or through misuse.
You are an important partner in maintaining natural gas safety. Here are some things you can do to keep natural gas service safe:
- Arrange for natural gas appliances and equipment to be installed, inspected and/or repaired by a trained professional.
- Have a qualified professional check the flexible connectors on your gas appliances. Some older models are unsafe. A flexible connector is the accordion-like piping used to install natural gas appliances such as ranges, water heaters and clothes dryers. Do NOT attempt to move the appliance or check the connector yourself. Even the slightest movement can cause a leak in an unsafe connector.
- Do not allow wiring or other objects to touch any gas connection or piping. Avoid repeated use of cleaning solutions or insect sprays around connectors and pipes, as they cause corrosion.
- Teach children that they should not turn on or attempt to light gas appliances.
