Legislation at the state and federal level impacts how we deliver safe, reliable products and services to our customers. Below you’ll find a few of the key issues we are tracking.
Greenhouse Gas Regulation
The debate about greenhouse gas regulation is a public policy challenge that needs global participation to significantly reduce atmospheric levels of carbon dioxide. We believe Congress should lead the development of any U.S. energy and environmental policies; regulatory agencies should only implement the policies. Any greenhouse gas policies should be results driven. And they should include all sectors of the economy and allow for a responsible resource mix, including coal, natural gas, nuclear, renewables and energy efficiency along with commercially available, cost-effective emissions control technologies. Policies supporting such a balanced approach allow us to continue providing our customers with reliable energy at a reasonable cost, while maintaining our commitment to environmental stewardship.
Alternative Fuel Vehicles
We support the adoption of alternative fuel vehicles, such as natural gas and electric vehicles, resulting in fuel diversity and reducing our nation’s dependence on foreign sources of energy. We support measures that promote electric and natural gas vehicles.
Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program
On behalf of our energy customers, we urge Congressional support for funding LIHEAP. This program helps utility customers, like our own, pay for vital gas and electric utility services, particularly as we face rising costs and a challenging economy.
Federal Tax Reform
Federal tax policy should be fair, equitable and fashioned with economic growth in mind. We support a lower, more competitive corporate tax rate and tax reform that focuses on encouraging long-term investment in capital formation. We also believe reforms should increase transparency, simplicity and certainty within the tax code. Tax reform should promote job creation by businesses and encourage individuals to invest in our nation’s future.
Natural Gas Development & Delivery
We strongly support continued exploration and production of oil and natural gas through the practice of hydraulic fracturing and believe states should retain the authority to regulate responsible use of this proven practice. Domestic natural gas production promotes a cleaner environment and lessens dependence on foreign oil. Renewable energy from intermittent sources of electricity, including wind and solar, are possible because natural gas generation is available when renewables are not. The availability of these resources is at risk if we do not maintain sound policies, including hydraulic fracturing, fair taxes, reduced regulation and access to public lands.
