RAPID CITY, SD — Friday, May 24, 2019 – Power restoration efforts for Black Hills Energy customers are near completion for the remaining customer that were out of power during the last day. The power outage began on Tuesday, May 21 due to the recent snow and high wind conditions that impacted about 5,200 customers in the Black Hills communities of Custer, Hill City, Silver City, Blue Wing, Keystone, Deadwood, Spearfish and Sturgis. This includes customers located at Custer State Park, Pactola Lake and Sheridan Lake areas. Today, Black Hills Energy crews continued the power restoration during the early morning hours and plan to have all customers with power by early evening.
The cause of the outages is the 8 to 18 inches of heavy wet snow and high winds affecting trees and power lines throughout the Black Hills region. Rapid City has experienced some minor outages with restoration occurring within hours of the reported outage. Black Hills Energy crews worked safely throughout the past few days into the early hours of the day and into the evening hours. Today, power was restored in the Pactola Lake and Blue Wing area as well as isolated locations in the northern and southern hills where seasonal vacation cabins were located.
During a heavy snow storm trees, power lines, and roof tops experience the weight of the heavy snow which may create damage to the service mast that is connected to the home. As the homeowner, you’re responsible for maintaining your home’s service mast. A mast is on the outside of your roof or at your meter and looks like a metal tube or pipe. It feeds power to your home from the overhead lines. To make sure power is flowing to your home, look at the mast but don’t touch it because it’s energized. If the mast looks loose, bent or damaged, you’ll need to contact a licensed electrician to fix it. The mast will need to be repaired before we can safely restore power to your house.
Here are the steps to repair a service mast in your home or business:
- Call a certified electrician to schedule repair.
- Electrician will call Black Hills Energy to turn off service to your home.
- The electrician will repair the meter can or service mast.
- The electrician will call an inspector to inspect the repair.
- The Inspector or electrician will call Black Hills to restore service to your home.
