In 2021, Black Hills Energy and its customers raised $178,000 to assist more than 300 customers with emergency energy assistance in Kansas.

Through its emergency utility assistance program Black Hills Cares, customers can donate through their utility bill that is matched at 100% by the Black Hills Energy Corporation Foundation.

Douglas County Customers

Warm Hearts of Douglas County

Black Hills Energy is the primary funder of Warm Hearts of Douglas County, which helps administer Black Hills Cares emergency utility assistance funds in Lawrence and the surrounding Douglas County. Applicants must reside within Douglas County, meet gross income guidelines based on current Federal Poverty Guidelines, and have verifiable income information for the three months preceding the date of the application.

Salvation Army

Black Hills Cares helps eligible Kansas residential customers in need pay their Black Hills Energy bills or emergency energy-related home heating expenses. Black Hills Cares is funded by the generosity of its customers and by a match from the Black Hills Energy Corporation Foundation.

Kansas Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP)

The Kansas Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP) is a Federally funded program that helps eligible households pay a portion of their home energy costs by providing a one-time per year benefit. This assistance typically runs from January through March.

Benefit levels vary according to the following factors:
•    Household income
•    Number of persons living at the address
•    Type of dwelling
•    Type of heating fuel
•    Utility rates
