Iowa Operations Supervisor, John, noticed a line of cars at a local Webster City, Iowa school, waiting for lunch to be handed out to kids in need.
John did a little more digging and found out that children under the age of 18 of families facing hardship could receive a school lunch even though classes have been canceled for the remining school year. John contacted his community affairs manager and together they learned that the school hands out lunches on Monday and Thursday to 700 children.
Each child receives three lunches on Monday – one hot for that day and two cold for Tuesday and Wednesday. On Thursday they receive a hot lunch for that day and a cold lunch to have on Friday. This means that on Monday they serve 2,100 meals and on Thursday 1,400 meals!
Black Hills Energy worked with the Enhance Hamilton County Foundation to make a $1,500 contribution to assist the school with costs to provide meals to these vulnerable families. Meals will be provided through May 21.
