Careers in Energy Week

careers in energy

This week, Oct. 14-18 we're celebrating Careers in Energy – careers that benefit millions of people every day.

This is our favorite time to highlight different employees and positions from throughout our company. The energy industry is an exciting industry to work in, and we want to show you what it can offer you too!

The Center for Energy Workforce Development (CEWD) was formed in March 2006 to help people GET INTO ENERGY! They help youth, veterans, engineers, transitioning workers, and women learn more about careers in energy. To learn more about CEWD, their vision, mission and initiatives, visit www.cewd.org.

Carl

Designer Engineering II

I worked in mechanical and structural environments, prior to Black Hills Energy, which gave me exposure to many different processes for building and designing equipment with the end purpose as the driving thought.

I learned to ask questions. Knowing the right questions to ask is almost better than knowing all the answers.

This industry offers the satisfying purpose of adding value to our communities by supplying the energy to move life along.

Jenny

Accounting Systems Analyst

As a military spouse, I had many opportunities to reinvent myself as we moved from duty station to duty station. When we moved to the Black Hills, South Dakota area, I focused my job search on companies that had a strong community presence, positive culture, and growth opportunities.

I focused my job search on companies that had a strong community presence, positive culture, and growth opportunities.  This focus led me to discover Black Hills Energy

This focus led me to discover Black Hills Energy and I began exploring potential job opportunities. My strategy was simply ‘a foot in the door’, which led to an Supply Chain Administrative Assistant position.  Within a year, I was fortunate to identify and obtain an internal job that worked towards my technical and process oriented strengths.  I now provide support to our company’s financial ERP system as a liaison between IT and the business.

My prior work experience includes nuclear oversight at a military shipyard facility.  The two industries share a commonality in the intense requirements to ensure proper accounting, reliability, security, and compliance with regulatory statutes. The context is very different, but the underlying principles remain the same.

Shayna

Electric Line Operations Intern

I completed line school and spent the previous few years working for transmission and electrical contractors.

A career as an electric line operations intern is both challenging and rewarding.

There are many opportunities for career progression

It pushes you mentally and physically while taking you out of your comfort zone. It utilizes hands on learning and being taught by the lineman who came before you. There is also constant change from task to task so you’re not doing the same mundane thing day in and day out.

Kyle

Workforce Optimization Analyst

To have the job today, included several years of experience with this company, previous experience as an analyst at a transportation company, and expertise in software such as Microsoft Excel, etc.

What is special about working in the energy industry is being able to be a part of a business that affects nearly everyone, as opposed to serving a particular customer base.

Chris

Gas Operations Tech

Earning an associates degree from Southeast Community College in Milford Nebraska was the jumping off point for my career in the energy industry. My education in Heating and Air Conditioning helped me to get an internship working as a service technician that allowed me to use my skills and later apply for a full time position with Black Hills Energy. The educational assistance program has helped me to get closer to my goal of obtaining a Bachelors Degree from Doane University. I anticipate graduating with a Communications degree in 2020.

I believe that the most special thing about working in the energy industry is positively impacting people’s lives.

The high character individuals I work with make the job rewarding and special as well.
