Keeping athletes safe in Casper, Wyoming

Volunteering in our communities is a big piece of who we are at Black Hills Energy, even when it involves roller skiing uphill.  

In Casper, Wyoming, this summer, Utility Construction Planning Manager William jumped into the mix during the annual Casper Mountain Biathlon Club’s Uphill Rollerski race. During this unique event, racers use roller skis, climbing 4.8 miles up 2,000+ feet of elevation on Casper Mountain. The race brings competitors from across the country, with one group traveling from Maine to participate. Many of the racers are training for Olympic or Paralympic competitions. The race gives them a chance to realize their full potential in a safe environment in beautiful Wyoming.

Although the race is marked and the racers are required to wear protective gear, there are still risks from passing vehicles. William contributed to the safety environment by working as a sweep vehicle to ensure cars traveling up Casper Mountain had a warning that racers were ahead.

“There were several times this seemed extremely useful as vehicles were coming up the road at a rapid pace, even around sharp corners,” he says. 

He also made sure that the competitors made it back down safely when it began to rain heavily.
