Black Hills Energy provides heat safety tips to help customers prevent heat-related illness and stay comfortable during hot weather.
Extreme heat can increase the risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, especially for children, older adults, outdoor workers and individuals with disabilities.
If you smell a gas odor, immediately evacuate from the building or area. Once you’re away from the building, call 911. Or, if you see damaged lines, leave the area immediately and call 911. Then, call us at 888-890-5554 to report the problem.
How to stay safe during extreme heat
Stay cool
- Stay in an air-conditioned area, especially during the hottest part of the day
- If your home doesn't have A/C, find a cool public space
- Avoid direct sunlight and remain indoors when possible
Stay hydrated
- Drink plenty of water throughout the day
- Avoid caffeine, alcohol and sugary beverages, which can increase dehydration
Limit outdoor activity
- Avoid strenuous work, exercise or outdoor activities during peak heat
- Schedule activities during cooler times like early morning or evening
Dress appropriately
- Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting and breathable clothing
Never leave children or pets in vehicles
- Vehicle temperatures can become deadly quickly, even with a window open
How to keep your home cool during extreme heat
Stay comfortable while using energy efficiently:
- The Department of Energy recommends setting your thermostat to about 78 degrees when you are home, and a few degrees higher when you’re away
- Use a smart thermostat to automate temperature changes
- Use fans to circulate air
- Close curtains and blinds to block sunlight and reduce indoor heat
- Run appliances, like washing machines and dishwashers, in the early morning or late evening instead
- Replace your HVAC filter regularly for better airflow
