Black Hills Energy partners with Rapid City Rush to deliver energy efficiency

On a recent Monday, the Black Hills Energy ambassadors joined players and staff from the Rapid City Rush in the Horace Mann neighborhood to share something practical with the community. Together, we distributed weatherization kits designed to help households save energy and improve comfort and prepare for summer weather.

Our ambassadors and Rush players split into small groups and headed out on foot to assigned homes, with weatherization kits in hand. Each kit included items like weatherstripping, outlet insulators, surge protectors and LED lightbulbs. Small upgrades like these can help reduce drafts, lower energy use and ease monthly bills over time.

Gas Margin Accountant, Mandee served as a group leader during the event. “I was in charge of following the map and getting us to the correct houses,” she said. “I also took charge in knocking on the doors and explaining who we are and what we are doing and then explaining some of the items in the bags we were handing out.”

Mandee said that the people they interacted with were excited and grateful. “Some were even Rush season ticket holders, so they shook all of the players’ hands in my group.”

Senior HR Benefits Analyst, Jamie shared a similar experience. She remembered one homeowner she met. “She was thrilled to see the Rush players and was a fan of the team,” Jamie said. “She talked hockey with the team members and was even more excited when they gave her free tickets to upcoming games and the energy efficiency kit.”

“It was fun to team up with the Rush,” she added.

 

 

The day stood out for both the community connections and the teamwork, for Senior Strategic Sourcing Specialist, Arman. “The homeowners were very surprised to see us and were almost immediately friendly,” he said. “They were very thankful for the kits and very excited to chat with the Rush players.”

“For the folks that we interacted with, it felt like we had made their day better.”

Arman was also impressed by the players’ enthusiasm. “They were really funny and entertaining,” he said. “You could tell that they enjoyed each other’s company and didn’t mind volunteering their time. They were very personable with the homeowners and seemed genuinely interested in taking part.”

The Rush players made the visits more exciting for homeowners, but the weatherization kits helped highlight how simple actions can support energy efficiency. Checking appliances, changing air filters, adjusting thermostats when away from home and using efficient lighting are small steps that can make a difference for many households.

Most importantly, the day was about showing up for the community. By working together with local partners, we can share helpful resources, build real connections and support our neighbors.
