Refrigerant - What's changing and why?

You may have heard that R-22, a refrigerant used in many older air conditioners, is now illegal to produce and import.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is phasing down the use of some refrigerants like R-22 and R-410A as part of a collaborative effort to eliminate ozone-depleting substances. Wondering what to do next? We’re here to help. Our technicians can help you identify if your system uses R-22 or R-410A and talk through your long-term options.

For more information about the EPA’s phase out, visit their website.

How do I know what refrigerant my unit uses?

On the outside unit of your air conditioner, you should see a white tag located on the back of the unit. That is where you will find exactly what type of refrigerant your unit uses.

When did the EPA phase-out begin?

  • 2010: R-22 banned for new equipment
  • 2020: R-22 production/import banned
  • 2024: R-410A phase-out begins
  • 2025: R-410A banned in new systems
  • 2026: R-410A installation ban

Why are R-22 and R-410A being phased out?

These refrigerants have high Global Warming Potential (GWP), contributing significantly to climate change. The EPA is mandating a transition to lower-GWP alternatives under the American Innovation and Manufacturing (AIM) Act to reduce environmental impact.

What is an A2L refrigerant?

A2L refrigerants, such as R-454B and R-32, are low-flammability refrigerants with significantly lower GWP than traditional options. They are becoming the standard in modern HVAC systems.

Can I retrofit my existing system to use A2L refrigerant?

No. A2L refrigerants require specially designed systems due to their flammability and pressure characteristics, retrofitting is not recommended or supported by manufacturers.

Are A2L refrigerants safe?

Yes, A2L refrigerants are safe when installed and serviced by trained professionals.  New systems include safety features like leak detection and ventilation to meet building codes.

What if my current system uses R-22 or R-410A?

You can continue to operate and maintain a system with R-410A, however, refrigerant availability and service costs will rise over time. R-22 is no longer available and not included in Service Guard plans, soon R-410A will be excluded as supply gets depleted.
