Southern Star acquisition

Southern Star has made the business decision to move away from the sale of natural gas to domestic meter customers. Its business model is now solely focused on the storage and interstate transportation of natural gas through their transmission system.

Part of that business decision is to eliminate its ownership and operation of domestic meters associated with farm taps on its system by transferring such ownership and operation to a qualified local distribution company.

Why is Black Hills Energy purchasing these customers?

Because your meter is located within our certificated area, Black Hills Energy is in the best position to serve the customers impacted by Southern Star’s business decision. Our employees in the area, commitment to customer service, and access to enhanced resources will provide a smooth transition to deliver the safe and reliable natural gas you’ve come to expect.

What are the next steps?

Now that FERC has approved Southern Star’s request, Black Hills Energy filed Docket 24-BHCG-652-ACQ on March 29 with the Kansas Corporation Commission to approve the purchase of these domestic meters in our service territory. It’s anticipated to take up to 240 days for approval.

Once approved, Black Hills Energy will start your onboarding process, which will include setting up an account and introducing you to all the great features you’ll come to appreciate as a Black Hills Energy customer.

What benefits will customers receive as part of Black Hills Energy?

How will this impact me?

Black Hills Energy is proud to be a customer-focused utility in Kansas and has held its rates among the lowest of the Kansas natural gas utilities. Based on an average residential customer’s usage of 67 dekatherms, an average Black Hills Energy monthly residential bill is approximately $58.
