Our History

Beginning with the Black Hills Gold Rush, generations of families have relied on us. And we’ve been ready.

We were there when electric lights first lit up the night in Deadwood,South Dakota. We helped fuel a changing economy and experienced how the modern miracle of energy can change how we live.

Since 1883 energy has moved us forward. And it will shape the future.

Colorado811 put on a Mock Line Strike, and Black Hills Energy was on site to help make it a success. The event was a great opportunity to demonstrate the importance of damage prevention, as well as debut a Black Hills Energy Call Before You Dig-branded truck!

November 2019 Community Giveback

Our third quarterly Community Giveback event, held at our corporate headquarters, featured 18 different organizations serving our Black Hills community in important and crucial ways. Both our local utility and the Black Hills Corporation Foundation have been making grants to worthwhile nonprofit organizations throughout our history, this is the third time we have hosted a collective recognition event in honor of you, our community partners. 

On Nov. 1, we presented over $460,000 in gifts to these worthwhile organizations.
