Click or call before you dig

A Team Ready tip as easy as 1-2-3.

Aug. 11 is National 811 Day, a great time to reacquaint yourself with the need to call 811 before you dig. Click or call 811 any time before you dig for your fall planting projects, no matter how big or small the job is.

It’s easy to love summer — the beach days, the smell of freshly cut grass, the late nights at the ball fields. But let’s not forget to give fall a little love. Those crisp fall evenings, the vibrant colors of leaves preparing for winter, and the excitement of a new school year are hard to beat.

It’s an exciting time filled with possibilities.

Team Ready reminds you that those possibilities include your house and yard, and as we move from one season to the next, don’t forget to give your yard a little tender loving care.

For instance, Team Ready recommends that you:

  • Cut back flowers like lilies, columbine, peony and hostas. Don’t go too crazy with those scissors, though. Some perennials, including echinacea, sedum, cosmos and zinnias, should NOT be cut back. Check out this list for more on which perennials need a haircut and which don’t.
  • Rake up leaves. No, this isn’t simply an aesthetic thing. Untended leaves could potentially smother your lawn which you most definitely don’t want. So get raking and use those leaves in your compost pile.
  • Cut your grass short. Gradually lower your mower cutting deck as you cut your lawn in the months leading to winter. Shorter grass keeps the critters from making your lawn a winter home.
  • Plant bulbs for a spring bloom. This includes hyacinth, daffodils, crocus and tulips.

You might think these little house projects couldn’t do any harm. But these small tasks could lead to big problems if you don’t call 811 before you dig. Many utilities are buried just a few inches below ground, so you could easily hit a line with even simple gardening projects.

Now, you’re ready for fall. And Team Ready is here to help.

We’ve put together an extensive resource center to help you help your home. So, what can we do for you today?
